View: Tool buttons

Tool buttons give you a choice of preset command buttons for you to place on your electronic pages. These buttons are the navigational aids that respondents use to move through your forms.

Select View | Tool buttons. Select the Tool button you want and click on Apply/OK. Position the crosshairs where you want the button. To select the style you want, use Format | Font. You may use the Align function on Tool buttons like any other object. You may resize the Tool button just as you resize questions and responses. You may want to add a Previous button to pages after the first. Be sure to place a Save button for the last page of your form.

You can have Tool buttons displayed in the same position on each page. This is usually done with the Next and Previous buttons. Click on and get the handles around the tool button that you want to use as the master (i.e. the one that is positioned where you want all of them to be) and select Edit | Reset Tool button on all pages. All Tool buttons of that type will be positioned on the page in the same place as the master.

The Tool choices are:

Skip Allows you to make buttons to jump to another page.
Help Opens a help window.
Lookup page Allows you to make buttons to jump to another page in a pop-up window.
Phone dial Uses a modem to dial a phone number stored in a field.
Next Goes to the next page. If the button is used on the last page, it will save the current record.
Previous Goes to the previous page.
OK Same as Next
Save Saves changes and goes to the next record.
Print Prints the current record.
Cancel Discards any changes and quits data entry.
Abort Same as cancel.
Top Goes to the first page in the form.
Bottom Goes to the last page in the form.
Comment Allows respondent to record and classify comments.
Save && Continue Saves changes and continues with the form.
Save && Exit Saves changes and exits from the form.

The label of a button is by default the same as the function (i.e. Next buttons have the text "Next", Save with "Save", etc.). You can change the text label of a Tool button by right-clicking on the button and selecting Modify from the pop-up menu or by clicking on the button and selecting Question | Modify Question from the menu bar, and typing in new text. You can change the font and color of a Tool button by selecting it, then selecting Format | Font from the menu bar.

Select Skip to skip or branch to another page from any part of the current form. Select the page to skip to and give a name for Button label that is clear to your users.

For example, you might name the button Review address and a person editing the record could click on Review address on this page to go to the page with the address. Select OK and position the button on the page. You can provide on-line help when you select the Help option in Tool buttons. Select the outside help from the list box and provide a name for the Button Label that is descriptive to the user. Select OK and position it.

Lookup Page

Lookup page lets you bring a page from elsewhere in the form to appear as a pop-up window on your current page. Select the page and give a name for the button label. Select OK and position it. You may fill out questions on the page being brought in. This option has many uses, for example for updating addresses, or providing a text block when someone chooses the response other.

Phone Dial

Phone dial lets you automatically dial a phone number by modem. Select the question that contains the phone number and give a name for the button such as Dial phone. Select OK and position your button. When someone clicks on the button the phone number automatically dials. You may have multiple phone numbers, that you might name, for example, Office Phone, Home Phone, etc...
