File: Customize

Default text properties and page color

Default text properties, the properties that text items initially have when creating the question, and page color settings are available under File | Customize in Form Design. This saves you time and trouble when you want all of your objects to have the same font for consistency, without having to go through the font selection every single time you create a new object.

NOTE: Custom colors allows you to set up your custom-colors for SURVEYWin in addition to the basic Windows colors. If you want to change the basic Windows colors, you will need to use the Control Panel in the Program Manager or Start menu to set them up. Refer to your Windows documentation for more information.

Prefill

Select File | Customize | Prefill to specify questions that are to be prefilled with the data from the corresponding question on the last record. This is useful in surveys like 360 degree evaluations that a respondent fills out for more than one case. Once respondents enter data that is repeated in each case, they do not have to reenter the data for each case.

Default Fonts

Select File | Customize | Default Fonts to set the defaults for:

Questions Sets Font type, style, size, color and effects.
Responses Sets Font type, style, size, color, effects and background color.
Tool Buttons    Sets Font type, style, size, color, effects and background color.
Cursor color Sets color for the cursor.
Page color Sets background color for pages.

Bitmaps

Select File | Customize | Bitmaps to Double the size of an inserted bitmap. Choose to include the form’s bitmaps in the form itself or in a file of bitmaps sent with the executable form.

Cursor Control

Select File | Customize | Cursor Control to determine how the cursor behaves during data entry.

No RED cursor in data entry indicates that the colored box will not appear around the next unanswered question in a page. Remember that with no RED cursor keyboard entry is not functional.

Wait for NEXT on single-question pages indicates that when a page contains only a single multiple choice response, it will not go to the next page unless the user specifically clicks the NEXT button. This is useful for forms that do not have ending pages, a user may want to enter the entire form and then go back to check on his answers.

PREVIOUS should not go to previously filled page is ideal for testing environments, so that you can skip a question and go back to it quickly without having to see all the questions you’ve already answered. To specify the cursor sequence within a given page, use the Question | Tab order of questions option.

Custom messages

The Custom messages feature, in File | Customize | Custom messages, allows you to personalize the messages that appear on the screen to ask the user for their password and for their user name. You may type in any text that you desire and that message will appear in the password and user name windows. If you do not personalize your own message, SURVEYWin will provide a default password and user name prompt. You may also personalize the Thank you dialog and Close/Abort dialogue.

Rotate

The File | Customize | Rotate | Pages function allows you to rotate pages within groups of pages when you are entering data, giving a random-question-order effect. You can take any particular subset of the form, and cause those pages to appear in random order relative to each other. They will remain fixed with respect to the rest of the pages. The File | Customize | Rotate | Page Blocks is not yet operative.

How to set up page rotation.

  1. Select File | Customize | Rotate | Pages.
  2. Select the pages you want to be included in the first group. To do this, highlight the pages in the lower left corner of the dialog box, then click the -> arrow to move them to the other side.
  3. Enter a name for the group in the box marked ‘Group Name,’ so you can refer to it later.
  4. Click on Save. Now those pages will be rotated among themselves during data entry.
  5. Repeat for multiple groups, and click OK when finished.

Self Teach Options

Select File | Customize | Self Teach Options to design tests and quizzes for either standard use or for self-instruction, where the student sees the correct answer, and, if wanted, explanatory text. The Self-Teach options determine how to handle the Self Teach feature of SURVEYWin. Do not show correct answer indicates that a user who selects an incorrect response will not be corrected immediately with a message. By default, this is set to show the correct answer. Do not show help indicates that a user who selects an incorrect response will not see the help associated with that response, if any. By default, help will appear.
